The Motability scheme has provided thousands of vehicles to disabled people. Since its creation in 1978, the scheme has brought transport to those who need it most, and it’s something that we’re proud to offer here at David Hayton, too.
But what is Motability, how can it help you, and what sort of cars does it apply to here at David Hayton? In this article, we’re going to take a closer look.
What is Motability?
Motability offers a more affordable option for disabled people to lease a new car or wheelchair-accessible vehicle, as well as scooters or powered wheelchairs.
It’s based upon a usual lease scheme, but on top of this, you get a motability allowance. Depending on the car, your allowance may be the same or less than the cost of the vehicle. More expensive cars, as a result, will need an additional payment to help cover the rest of the balance. This is known as an advance payment.
Who Can Apply for Motability?
The Motability Scheme is available to drivers who receive these allowances:
- Enhanced rate mobility is part of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Higher rate mobility is part of the Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced rate mobility part of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
- Higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
If you need more information on this, then you can contact Motability directly to see if you’re eligible for the scheme.

Is Anything Else Included with the Agreement?
Every Motability lease includes some extras. For instance, your insurance is covered by the total cost of the lease, and you can have up to three named drivers, alongside service and maintenance. On top of this, you’ll get a full breakdown assistance setup as well as tyre repair and replacement should you need it. If you’re choosing an electric vehicle, then a home chargepoint and standard installation will be included, or a three-year subscription to the BP Pulse charging network.
If you have any questions about these extra factors, feel free to get in touch and ask a member of the team about them.
