Our Van Range - What to Look for in a Van?

Fri 30th May 2025

A van has to play a variety of roles. From the day-to-day workhorse to a much-trusted load-lugger, a van needs to be dependable, practical and usable. Here at David Hayton, we’ve got an excellent range of used vans that can fit any requirement, from compact models to large versions that’ll tackle any job.

But what should you be thinking about when purchasing a van, and what do we currently offer? Let’s take a look.

Payloads

One of the easiest ways to choose what type of van you need is to think about payloads. This is the permitted total weight that a van can carry, as permitted by the manufacturer. So if you’re able to estimate what you’ll be carrying around and how much it will weigh, it’ll make the job of choosing a van much easier.

It’s also much better to be slightly over than under, as an overloaded van could see you hit with a fine. So think about what you usually carry, what it weighs and how easily you’ll be able to take it around. For instance, if you’re frequently carrying garden supplies such as gravel or topsoil, you may want a van with a bigger payload so you’re always within the rules.

Type of Van

There’s a type of van out there for nearly all types of jobs. Compact models are great for those delivering or transporting goods around urban areas where space is at a premium, while tippers get a hydraulic ram, which is great for heavier goods that need transporting right to the place where they’re going to be used.

Likewise, you’ve got car-based vans which have more windows, or a Luton model which is large and boxy, making it great for bulkier items.

Seats

It’s a good idea to think about the number of seats that you’ll need in your van, too. For instance, if you’re often travelling on your own, then it’s unlikely that you’ll need more than three chairs up front. This allows you to maximise load space, too.

In contrast, if you’ve got a team with you or take larger groups to a site, then a crew van will be a better choice as it offers more seating space. However, they won’t be able to bring the same kind of load area as a traditional panel van.

Fuel Type

Not that long ago, it was only really diesel that was the choice of propulsion for vans. But in more recent times, electric vans have come to the fore, with many inner-city drivers favouring these zero-emission vehicles as a way to get around tightening emissions regulations.

There’s still a great number of diesel-powered vans for those who need it, but it could be a good idea to think about what type of fuel could work best for you.

What vans do we have here at David Hayton?

Volkswagen Caddy

The Caddy is a compact Volkswagen van which offers a more car-like driving experience thanks to its low ride height and familiar controls. That said, it’s still very practical and thanks to its two-door rear opening, affords an easy entry and exit point for larger, bulkier items.

The Volkswagen Caddy also has a strong reputation for reliability and it’s accompanied by a clever diesel engine which brings a good mix of performance and efficiency.

Vauxhall Movano

If you’ve got a big job to do, then the Vauxhall Movano could be the car for you. It’s one of the largest vans that Vauxhall has produced, bringing a huge load area and an impressive payload which will ensure you’re never caught short, no matter how large the job.

Inside, you’ll find a rugged interior with lots of storage and a no-nonsense feeling, which will ensure it’ll handle the toughest of days.

Ford Transit Custom

In terms of vans, there are a few which are as well-known as the Ford Transit. The Custom version, which is the core model in the Transit range, offers everything you could want from a dependable van. It’s spacious, has a good track record for reliability and can be kitted out with all types of racking and systems that will make it even easier to use on the job.

Transit models also come with plenty of equipment, with this model equipped with features such as Bluetooth connectivity, a heated windscreen and front and rear parking sensors.

Here at David Hayton, we’ve got a van that’ll fit any need. Plus, all models come with a three-month warranty and roadside assistance, as well as a minimum of nine months' MOT so that you’re ready to go as soon as you’ve got the keys.
